A GROUP of truckers protesting Covid restrictions that have been dubbed the “Freedom Convoy” are set to hit Washington DC.

The truckers, an offshoot of protests in Canada in recent weeks, are promising to bring traffic to a halt in DC on Sunday, according to the group.

Many attendees said they supported “medical freedom” and wanted Covid mask mandates to end.

Mask mandates already are ending across the country after new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week removed strong mask recommendations for much of the country.

The convoy is made up of dozens of trucks and hundreds of cars, according to NBC News.

  • What is the freedom convoy 2022? Part 3

The Kansas Truckers for Freedom Facebook page is encouraging people to join and is private except for those accepted into the group.

The front page of the site says, “Let’s stand up for our freedoms and fight these unlawful mandates peacefully and effectively! The US is currently organizing a similar convoy to that of Canada,” the site says.

“If you are from Kansas and would like to be a part of this, or simply wish to support from home, please join! Trucker or not, we need to stand together and say NO to all of these “health” mandates!”

The truckers hit Washington D.C. on Sunday.

  • What is the freedom convoy 2022? Continued

The convoy has been updating its location and on Thursday, March 3 they were greeted in Salina, Kansas by a crowd of people cheering and waving American flags.

“We support anything when it comes to truck drivers and their freedom,” convoy supporter Chelly Menkhofm told 13WIBW News. “And when it comes to the freedom, you gotta do what you gotta do.”

Another supporter, Dalton McDowell, said the people gathering in support of the Freedom Convoy “is a great show in solidarity with not only the truckers but the general contractors and employees that are forced to get the (COVID-19) vaccination. And I stand with them.”

  • What is the freedom convoy 2022?

The freedom convoy 2022 was inspired by the trucker protests in Ottowa, Ontario in Canada. The group is made up of activists who are openly against Covid-19 vaccine mandates even as mandates across the country are lifting.

The convoy set off from California last week with its sights set on blocking the D.C. beltway, The Washington Post reported; but the leader of the convoy, Brian Brase, said that is no longer the plan.

They now intend to reach Hagerstown, Maryland this weekend and Brase said they do not intend to target Washington, D.C.

  • Trump supported ‘Freedom Convoy’ in Canada, part three

In his CPAC speech in late February, former President Trump said it was America’s responsibility to defend Canadian democracy.

If Democrats truly want to “look abroad and fight for what they want to fight for, they should start with the democracy that is under threat right next door,” Trump said. “It’s called Canada.”

He claimed the truckers who were a part of the Canadian “Freedom Convoy” were victims of “tyranny” and charged with “phony crimes.”

“They’re being hunted down like enemies of their own government,” he accused.

“You are either with the peaceful truckers, or you are with the left-wing fascists.”

  • Trump supported Canadian ‘Freedom Convoy’, part two

Former President Trump also claimed that GoFundMe is “denying access to funds that belong to the Freedom Convoy.”

“This is unacceptable and extremely dangerous in any country that values free expression,” Trump added in his statement supporting the Candian Freedom Convoy, which inspired the one in the United States.

“TruthSocial is announcing today that we are welcoming the Freedom Convoy with open arms to communicate freely on TruthSocial when we launch – coming very soon! TruthSocial will fight back against Big Tech so we can protect our rights to free expression.”

He ended the statement with a jab at Facebook, writing, “Also, on top of everything, it is big news that Facebook daily users went down for the first time ever, people are tired of biased social media like Twitter and Facebook, and it’s showing in their numbers!”

  • Trump supported Canadian ‘Freedom Convoy’

Former President Donald Trump released a statement supporting the Canadian “Freedom Convoy” on February 4.

“Facebook and Big Tech are seeking to destroy the Freedom Convoy of Truckers,” he began.

“The Freedom Convoy is peacefully protesting the harsh policies of far-left lunatic Justin Trudeau who has destroyed Canada with insane Covid mandates.”

“Now, thankfully, the Freedom Convoy could be coming to DC with American Truckers who want to protest Biden’s ridiculous Covid policies.”

He also previously claimed that Facebook was “canceling” the Freedom Convoy USA accounts.

  • What do the protestors want?

They’re looking to end Covid-19 mandates, such as mask and vaccine requirements.

In a news release, the People’s Convoy said: “The average American worker needs to be able to end-run the economic hardships of the last two years, and get back to the business of making bread.

“To that end, it’s time for elected officials to work with the blue-collar and white-collar workers of America and restore accountability and liberty by lifting all mandates and ending the state of emergency – as COVID is well-in-hand now, and Americans need to get back to work in a free and unrestricted manner.”

  • Live on Twitter

The protesting truckers are live now on social media platforms.

A tweet by the convoy warns their audience that their internet surfing could be tracked by the government.

“Truckers against Trudeau, end the mandates, live now,” the tweet says.

“Protect your private IP adress when surfing online, use a VPN so that the police or governments won’t track you,” the account shared and added a link.

  • Departed Hagerstown

The truckers left Hagerstown, Maryland today around 1pm on Sunday, according to their tweet.

More beltway driving is expected on Monday.

  • High schools students support

New Jersey high school students created a YouTube video to help support the convoy.

The two-minute video aims to bring monetary donations to The People’s Convoy.

In the video, many clips of the convoy are pieced together while rock songs play, including a version of ACDC’s Thunderstruck with the word “Convoy” being chanted rather than “Thunder” in the beginning.

  • Support from the sidelines

Two women were shown in a video walking on the side of the road, with one holding an American flag and the other a Canadian flag.

  • Many mask mandates ending

Although many of the truckers seem in support of the end of mask mandates, such mandates are already are ending across the country.

Cities and states across the country have been easing mask mandates after new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week removed strong mask recommendations for much of the United States.

  • Truckers introduce themselves

A video shared on Twitter features several truck drivers who are participating in the convoy.

They introduced themselves and share what they do.

  • Opposition to the convoy

Several Twitter users have spoken out against the trucker convoy.

“They really took all this time and money to look so stupid,” wrote one user.

This trucker convoy really feels like an article from The Onion. White people thinking they’re oppressed because they had to wear a mask during a pandemic and driving their trucks in circles to combat it

    — Herbo (@ManLikeGinola) March 6, 2022

Im still trying to figure out what freedoms they don’t have. I have ask several of the #TruckerConvoy and nobody has been able to answer. They really took all this time and money to look so stupid.

  • Where is the convoy traveling today?

The convoy said it will travel through Route 40, Interstate 81 south, Interstate 70 east, and Interstate 270 south, as protestors head to the Capitol Beltway.

The group will reportedly circle the Beltway twice, before returning to Hagerstown.

  • Who organized the Washington convoy?

Organizers Heidi and Gene Westgate said they planned the convoy in about a week from their Renton, Washington, home.

The real estate agents said they’re against both government and private company mandates.

  • ‘Not targeting’ DC

The Washington Post reported one participant of the convoy posted a live stream on YouTube Friday, March 4, 2022, and said, “select trucks will be going to the White House,” but they would not be targeting the city.

“I don’t want people thinking we are invading D.C.,” he said on the live stream. “This is not the convoy going into D.C. commons. This is a few select drivers.”

  • Major traffic delays expected

It has been reported that the convoy will leave Hagerstown between 9 and 9.30am and head to the Beltway.

The protestors said they will do two slow laps around, and major traffic delays are expected.
